Why New Zealand honey is special

Because of those properties, Mānuka honey is often regarded as a “premium” or “special” honey internationally — not just a sweetener.

The most famous honey from NZ is Mānuka honey. It’s made by bees that collect nectar from the native Mānuka tree (Leptospermum) in New Zealand.

Mānuka honey contains unique compounds — for example methylglyoxal (MGO) — that aren’t found (or only in very low amounts) in regular honey. These compounds are believed to give Mānuka honey its distinctive properties.

Typical Types of NZ Honey Products

Here are common honey-based products from New Zealand:

Raw / pure Mānuka honey — jars of honey graded by MGO or UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) rating, e.g. MGO 250+, MGO 500+, etc.
Mānuka honey with added beneficial ingredients — e.g. honey mixed with herbal extracts, propolis, bee-pollen, etc., for enhanced health benefits.
Health & wellness products — not just honey jars: some companies produce honey-derived products such as propolis supplements, royal-jelly products, or honey-based wellness goods.
Topical / skincare & cosmetic items — some NZ brands make products using Mānuka honey (and bee-derived ingredients), such as creams, balms, or skin-care serums.

Why People Use NZ Honey

People use New Zealand honey — especially Mānuka — for a few reasons:

As part of holistic / natural-health lifestyle: combining honey with herbal extracts or bee-derived products (propolis, pollen) for overall wellness.

As a natural sweetener (in tea, food, etc.) instead of refined sugar

For health & wellness support: many use honey for throat soothing, immune support, digestion support.

For skin / external use: in some cases Mānuka honey products are used topically (skin creams, balms) for antibacterial and antioxidant benefits.
